A Contemporary Barn In Leicestershire

Leicestershire

This kitchen was designed to balance contemporary architecture with a sense of timeless, natural character. Flooded with daylight, the space called for a palette that would enhance its openness while still feeling warm and inviting. Soft Zoffany Duck Egg cabinetry provides a calm, light-reflective backdrop, while the island, finished in a deeper Hague Blue, introduces contrast and definition in a controlled, contemporary way.

A carefully detailed mantel forms a key focal point within the room and brings depth and character to the elevation. Its intricate detailing adds a sense of timeless craftsmanship that sits comfortably within the contemporary setting.

The layout is centred around a generous island that supports both everyday use and informal gathering. More than a visual statement, the bold blue island acts as a functional hub within the kitchen, incorporating tailored storage solutions including open shelving and integrated wine racks. It anchors the room visually while encouraging easy movement and interaction between the kitchen and the adjoining open-plan living space. Modern requirements are integrated seamlessly, with the French door refrigerator and Belfast sink sitting naturally within the overall design.

The scale of the space and the quality of natural light were central to our client’s vision. High ceilings and rooflights allow daylight to wash down through the room, subtly changing the atmosphere throughout the day and reinforcing the feeling of openness. The tall cabinetry was designed to make use of this verticality, drawing the eye upwards while maintaining a balanced sense of proportion.

Natural materials were used to ground the design and introduce warmth. The solid wood island worktop adds depth and tactility, working in harmony with the herringbone flooring and Silestone™ quartz worktops. These layered materials bring visual interest without distraction, ensuring the space feels cohesive and carefully considered.

Throughout the project, our client’s commitment to the process was evident at every stage. From early design discussions through to manufacture and installation, we worked closely together, including a visit to our workshop while the kitchen was being made. The result is a kitchen defined by balance, light and thoughtful detailing.
