A Derbyshire Country Retreat

Swadlincote, Derbyshire

This kitchen was designed for a client who loves to cook. From the outset, our client was clear that this needed to be a hardworking, practical space - somewhere that could comfortably support regular baking, everyday cooking and the quiet rituals that come with spending a lot of time in the kitchen. It is very much a room shaped by use as well as being aesthetically pleasing.

The layout was carefully planned to provide generous worktop space, ample storage and room for a wide range of appliances, all that needed to be easily accessible. Our client wanted a kitchen that felt organised and efficient, without losing its warmth or sense of character. A dedicated larder plays an important role in this, providing space for ingredients, cookery books and equipment that needs to be close at hand, while keeping the main working areas clear and uncluttered.

The kitchen is arranged into distinct zones, each designed around how the space is used throughout the day. A coffee and breakfast area is built into the wall where the original fireplace once stood, creating a natural pause point within the room. To improve flow between spaces, we opened up the adjoining wall to form a walk-through into the dining room, strengthening the connection between cooking, dining and everyday family life.

Character features were retained and celebrated wherever possible. One particularly unique detail lies beneath your feet - the dark oval shape set into the floor marks the location of an original well, a reminder of the property’s history and a feature that adds quiet interest without disrupting the function of the room.

To bring warmth and contrast to the darker cabinetry, rich dark red accents were introduced through statement elements including the bold Lacanche range cooker and the upholstered seating, adding depth and a subtle sense of luxury while tying the whole scheme together beautifully.

The result is a kitchen that feels structured and purposeful, designed around the habits and passions of its owner. Practical, well-zoned and full of character, it is a space that works hard every day while remaining warm, personal and rooted in its countryside setting.
