An 18th Century Cottage
Odstone, Leicestershire
This project focused on transforming the kitchen and utility spaces within a characterful cottage dating back to 1750. With its exposed beams and uneven structure, the house presented both charm and challenge, calling for a thoughtful approach that would respect its history while making the space genuinely work for modern life.
From the outset, our client brought a clear vision to the process. Having spent time researching layouts, finishes and practical details, she arrived with carefully considered mood boards and a strong sense of how she wanted the rooms to feel. Our role was to help translate those ideas into a cohesive design that felt calm, purposeful and entirely at home within the building.
Designed for a household of three keen cooks, the kitchen needed to support daily use without feeling busy or overcrowded. The finished space feels open and composed, with generous work surfaces and clear sightlines encouraging movement, conversation and shared cooking.
To preserve the openness of the space, cooking and extraction were handled discreetly. A BORA X-Pure downdraft cooktop - which draws cooking smells and steam down into the appliance - was chosen, removing the need for overhead ventilation and allowing the original beams to remain the visual focus. Twin NEFF Slide&Hide single ovens were built into the island, making them easy to access while keeping the perimeter of the room uncluttered and calm.
Throughout the design, the cabinetry was carefully adapted to work around the cottage’s original features. Beams, walls and proportions guided the detailing, with subtle adjustments made during manufacture to ensure everything sat comfortably within the character of the building rather than competing with it.
The result is a kitchen that feels at home within a space that honours the age and individuality of the cottage whilst supporting 21st Century living. Practical, welcoming and considered in every detail, it reflects both the client’s vision and the craftsmanship taken to bring it to life.
